Easy Access or Easily Concealed

Chris has a post up where he discusses the accessories that came in the box with his new carry pistol. He is particularly taken with the magazine holster, which holds his spare ammo securely while still presenting it for easy access.

I certainly agree that those hard plastic magazine carriers are pretty sweet so far as tactical considerations are concerned, and I would want something like that riding on my hip if I had to defend my life. But I have made the decision to opt for concealment over pistolcraft. I use a single nylon magazine pouch with a velcro flap.

It is extremely unobtrusive, mainly because I carry a lot of gear on my belt. The spare magazine is mixed in with my mini-flashlight, cell phone, and digital camera. And all those gadgets are packed away in their own individual nylon pouches with velcro flaps.

Besides making me feel like Batman strapping on his utility belt when I get dressed....

....it provides perfect camouflage for the ammo. Just another pouch, might hold a multitool.

Hmmm. A multitool! Seems there's something I forgot to hang off the belt.

I've posted this before, but couldn't find where, so please forgive any duplication. I struggled for years to find a discreet, secure method to carry a supply of spare .38 Special ammo which didn't "scare the natives" or scream "COP" by its very appearance.

IMHO this is THE answer. Three Bianchi speed strips can be inserted vertically, heel-to-toe with the thumb tabs up. When zipped the pouch is VERY flat and unobtrusive. Unzipping, grab the tab of the CENTER speed strip FIRST. This avoids bullet noses hanging up against the zipper upon withdrawl. Once the first strip is out, the other two are freely accessible.

This pouch carries 18 rattle-free, spare rounds in a flat, discreet package which hugs the body. It is much less bulky and presents a lower profile than either the Bianchi X16R or the Dillon Precision "dump box" style speed strip pouch, which I replaced with this. See:

Back when I used to carry a Makarov, I carried a spare mag in a multi-tool sheath.

In all Fairness I the XD mag carrier is concealable. In order to hide the gun that goes with it I need a jacket or very long shirt to leave untucked and if anything the mag carrier is more easily concealble than the pistol.

I've got that XD holster and have to say it totally sucks. When outfitting myself and the Mrs for tactical shooting I bought Forbus paddle holsters and mag holders. Worked great a FrontSite.

I still use the Forbus holster for everyday carry, but have come to realize it sticks out quite a ways from my side. I just ordered a IWB holster which should get here in the next few days and will be the subject of an indepth post.
