Good Advice From Glenn

Instapundit posted some advice to homeowners, but just about everyone should pay heed.

The post starts out with cleaning up after a spill, such as a water main break or sewage overflow. Glenn suggests that you buy a cheap wetvac.

A reader Emailed him and suggested that everyone know where their gas, sewage, electricity and water shutoffs are located, and if tools are needed to work the valve then they should be hung on the wall next to them so they are handy in an emergency.

Another reader chimed in with the need for homeowners/renters insurance, so you won't have to come up with the multiple thousands of dollars needed to repair your home and replace your stuff.

This is all really good advice. Most gunbloggers like myself like to write about the big stuff, like emergency supplies needed to keep yourself and your family alive if you have to abandon your house and run for the hills. What is neglected is the little nitty-gritty details on how to handle the costly and potentially dangerous problems that occur inside the house that makes it difficult to live there, instead of the huge disasters that come from the outside.

I have some personal experience with cleanup after a flood. Most basic in DECONTAMINATION after a flood or enemy attack is to START IMMEDIATELY, even if you don’t know what the agent is.

Sandia Decontamination Foam (US Patent 6,566,574 B1) is sold as Scott's Liquid Gold Mold Control 500 in hardware stores.

This material was developed for use in building deconamination after enemy attack. It is effective against most chemical and biological agents, including nerve, blister,
anthrax, SARS, Norwalk, avian and common flu.

It is widely used for hospital /hotel sanitization, mold remediation in commercial buildings, cleaning / neutralizing agricultural sprayers. It was used to decontaminate US Postal facilities after the anthrax attacks following 9/11. I used it to clean up my own basement after tropical storm Ernesto.

Moderate cost, about $30 at Home Depot.
