Ambulance Chasers go High Tech

Most police reports are public documents, available to any who are interested. That is as it should be.

I have received 17 calls in the past 2 hours from various chiropractors, doctors, and physical therapists. They all mention that I was the victim of a rear-end collision, and wouldn't I just like to come on by their offices and take advantage of their free initial consultation?

"Take advantage" is the phrase that is most applicable. No one has come right out and said that I could soak the other guy's insurance company if I had only been injured, but there are a few hints floating through the conversations. Most of the people who call act shocked (shocked!) when I insist that I'm perfectly fine. A few of them were quick to point out that back injuries might take some time to show up, which is certainly true. But the collision was hardly energetic, and I get knocked around more when I roughhouse with my dogs.

Some people insist that it is alright to try and get what you can from large corporations, like insurance companies. But money is like anything else, it has to come from somewhere.

Pretty soon that'll be automated too.

(male voice in halting, pre-recorded cadence) Hello, our records indicate that you were involved in a (begin female voice) rear-end collision. (end female voice) If you've suffered any pain and would like to pursue monetary restitution, press one. If you haven't suffered any pain, but need an exam to confirm you didn't suffer any harm, press two. If you're perfectly fine, but would like a doctor to tell you that you're not, press three...

Bob:

As you might guess, my oppinion of most chiropractors is pretty harsh, mostly because I've grown up in a D.O. medical household and they have very harsh words about the scientific valididty of chiropractic methods.

Besides that, as far as I'm concerned I like public polic reports since its an opportunity for the press (bloggers included) to keep people honest.

They probably all found out because you did a blog post about it.

You really want to jerk the attorneys' chains on this? Next one to call, just ask for his state bar number. Chances are, they will just hang up, but if one presses and asks why you want it, just tell him you want to check his references at the state bar association. You should be able to hear his/her a**hole slam shut over the phone.

I hate to admit it, but I worked for a PI firm for awhile. It's every bit as bad, or worse, than what you allege. It was a mistake to be in that business at all, and I learned some harsh lessons. I thought I was going to work for people who were different than the norm that we've come to believe from ambulance chasers, but they're all the same. It did not end well.

The chiros usually work with a PI firm, and they'll get you in, and tell you that basically if you work with an attorney, they'll treat for nothing, pending payment from settlement of the case. They'll refer you to a lawyer they work with. The lawyer can't legally chase down business, but they can by proxy through the doctors. They'll bill between 3-8000 for their work, which is about six weeks of rub-and-tickle treatment. The attorney will present a settlement demand. The insurance company will settle the case, the chiro will cut his bill by as much as 50%, and everybody walks away having made money on the deal. Except the insurance company, but they often figure that if they don't have to pay litigation costs, it's cheaper to settle.

It amounts to legal extortion, plain and simple. If we wonder why our insurance rates are so high, look no further. By the way, John Edwards is a personal injury attorney, lest we forget.

Oh, the stories I could tell. Your experience is simply the tip of the iceberg.

Cricket:

I would get in touch with a reputable attorney because such 'matches in h*ll' are illegal in some states, as the lawyers get a kickback from the chiros. If you need competent legal help, let your fingers do the walking or search out a lawyer who isn't 'just' a PI attorney.

Bottom feeders.

I was involved in an accident some years back where I was stopped in traffic and a car coming off the expressway at high speed slammed my car into the truck in front of me. I do not recall who selected the chiropractor who treated me; I may have found him in the phonebook based on being located near my work. A few adjustments restored the shoulder mobility I lost as a result of the impact and were well worth whatever the driver's insurance paid.
