Alandp of Blognomicon fame has a fine post about mouse guns you probably should read.
In his post, Alan links to a story about the owner of a pawn shop who was attacked by a nutbag armed with a sword.
He was stabbed before he was aware that an attack had even been started, and all of his plans as to what he would do and which weapon he would use went out the window when that wave of pain and fear hit. There were plenty of guns laid out and near to hand (it was a gun store, after all), but the only thing on him that he was able to use was a .25 Auto that was being carried in his pants pocket. That little gun saved his life, even as he was trying to pull 3 feet of sharp steel out of his gut with his bare left hand.
Two of the 5 shots fired by the innocent victim entered through the eye socket and rattled around for awhile in the cranium. That ended the fight.
The victim managed to call 911 before blood loss caused him to pass out. He survived, the attacker didn't.
Alan says that the lesson to be learned is that it is important to carry a firearm that will always be with you. If it is too big or bulky, you might not have it with you when you depserately need it.
That is pretty good advice.

Man, that attacker was certainly a strange, strange man. We're better off with him dead.

Something I thought was interesting about the pawn shop attack was that even at sword distances, the owner didn't place his shots well under pressure, and needed more or less the entire magazine to do the job. If he had a two shot deringer, or gun that required more complex operation (I.E. single action NAA mini-revolver, or a manually operated semmerling pistol) he would have been screwed.
